Unholy Passions

In James 4:1-6 we find James asking and answering three thought-provoking questions concerning the results of our prideful lives and how the Gospel overcomes our pride. The first question is: What causes quarrels and fights among you? The answer is: Your passions are unrighteous and your prayerlife is unhealthy. The second question is: Are you not aware that your worldly behavior has consequences? The answer is: Your worldly behavior makes you idolatrous adulterers and it makes you enemies of God. The third question is: Does the Scripture speak in vain? The answer is: Our life can be marked by prideful envy that God opposes, but God overcomes our pride with grace when we humble ourselves.
