Election - A Right or A Blessing?

There has been a lot written about the biblical doctrine of election through the centuries. There has been a lot of controversy and a lot of confusion, and much that has been written has generated more heat than light. Is the election of God a right or entitlement to be claimed by all men universally, or is it a blessing freely and sovereignly given from the abundance of God's great heart?
