Mercy In God's Judgment, Micah #2, Greg Price, Covenanter Pastor

While noting how God's judgments in history often drive His people closer to Him (teaching us lessons about holiness that we would otherwise miss), Price also shows how God delights in mercy -- demonstrating that He takes 'no pleasure in the death of the wicked' (Ezek. 33:11).

This sermon also teaches us how to respond to signs of God's judgment and encourages prayer, fasting, secret worship, family worship and inward faithfulness and communion with Christ.

Levity, lightness and the desire for popular acceptance in preaching is also denounced as a sign of defection and backsliding -- as Price illustrates in the following quote which he cites from an English minister in 1656 (Richard Baxter, The Reformed Pastor, pp. 119-120),

'Of all preaching in the world . . . I hate that preaching which tends to make the hearers laugh, or to move their minds with tickling levity, and affect them as stage-plays used to do, instead of affecting them with a holy reverence of the name of God. Jerome says, 'Teach in thy church, not to get the applause of the people, but to set in motion the groan; the tears of the hearers are thy praises.''

Christ's free offer of salvation is also proclaimed in this message.
