God's Anointed Servant
Series Isaiah
18
- GOD’S SERVANT ANOINTED
(a) an important distinction – the speaker distinguishes himself from the Lord
- the NT amplifies this in its revelation of the Father/Son relationship
(b) anointed with the Spirit – the Son anointed by the Father with the Spirit!
- see John 1:32-34 – the Spirit came down and “remained on” Jesus!
- also it is Jesus as the Anointed One who gives the Spirit to his people!
- THE MINISTRY OF GOD’S ANOINTED SERVANT
(a) proclamation – bringing good news is given the first place in the list!
- the “poor” carries the idea of being disadvantaged but powerless to change
- v. 2 – note the contrast – a “year” (of favour) but a “day” (of vengeance)
(b) transformation – the Anointed One changes what exists into its opposite!
- (i) liberty for captives to replace imprisonment – Matt. 12:22-29 – v. 28!
- (ii) joy for mourners to replace sorrow and grief – Rev. 21:3-4
(c) acclamation – the ultimate purpose in this is to bring out God’s beauty!
