Sovereign Over All
Series The Book of Joshua
Interwoven in the description of the northern conquest in Joshua 11 is the theme of God's sovereignty. But what does this mean? In simple terms, it means He controls all things. We often think of it in terms of election but the term is far broader than that. It has been said that God either rules over all or he does not rule at all. God's sovereignty is writ large in this chapter
Overview
coalition (1-5)
The wicked kings come together against the Lord and His peoplecomfort (6)
Be not afraid for I will deliverconflict (7)
Conflict is not quick but ends in victory
The Lesson: God's sovereignty is seen
in His authority to command (12)
Joshua destroyed as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded. Jehovah gave the initial command and it was passed on. There is no debate or argumentation with God on the part of Moses or Joshua.in His bringing victory in conflict (6-9)
2a. In his words to his people (6)
These words would mean nothing if God did not rule over all
2b. in His working through His people (7-8)
We see the agency of men and sovereignty of God. Mark 16:20 mentions the Lord working with them. The dignity and honor of the gospel laborer is that God is pleased to use them. The Anakims were mentioned by unbelieving spies but in 21-22 they are gone. God works with us and through us.
2c. in His warning to the people (9)
The people had to destroy instruments of war rather than use them. It is a warning not to forget God is in the ultimate authority. Joshua heeded the warning.in His conduct toward enemies (20)
If you are determined to rebel, your soul is in peril. Joshua 11 is justice. The gospel is mercy.
