Nehemiah 1

There are two major themes in the book of Nehemiah:

Chapters 1-6—Rebuilding the Wall
Chapters 7-13—Restoring the People

The realization of the ruins. (vs. 1-3)

Where?

What?

Rebuilding is a process. (v. 4)

Contemplation  -  “sat down”

Consternation  -  “wept”, “mourned”, “fasted”

Responding in prayer. (vs. 5-11)

Recognition of the character of God.(vs. 5-6a)

Repented of personal and corporate sins. (vs. 6-7)

Reminded God of His precious promises. (vs. 8-10)

Requested specific help to begin the process. (v. 11)

Application:

Are there any broken down walls or burned gates in your life?
Rebuilding is a process. Discuss Nehemiah's state of mind in v. 4. Does what he went through speak to you at this time in your life, or have you ever had to deal with issues that brought about this kind of brokenness.
Define the word “revival” or “renewal”.
Talk about Nehemiah's prayer for an exercise walk through this prayer and talk about what and where it speaks to you.
