Do Not Quench the Spirit - Joy, Prayer, Gratitude

56

Idea: The Spirit of God in you gives you joy, leads you to prayer, and fills you with gratitude, therefore believers should fan these gifts of the Spirit into flames, or as Paul puts in the negative, do not quench the Holy Spirit.

Intro: In vs. 19, Paul warns believers, do not quench the Spirit. Quenching brings to mind a flame or fire, referring likely to the way the presence of the Spirit was shown as tongues of flame on the Day of Pentecost. Quenching the Spirit would then be to resist His work or to dampen His work in your life. I want you to read this in the direct context where the work of the Spirit is plainly joy, prayer, and gratitude. In fact, these are the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. These deep Christian graces flow from the Spirit of the Triune God dwelling in you and may be nurtured, fanning them into flames. Or they may be neglected and repressed, quenching the flame of the Spirit.

  1. Rejoice Always.
  2. Pray Without Ceasing.
  3. In Everything Give Thanks.
