'Quite A Young Man'

91

The parenthetical passage of Galatians 2:3-5 describes something that happened within the context of the Jerusalem Conference. The passage is a purposeful digression from the flow of thought between 2:1-2 and 2:6-10. It describes something that epitomized the controversy central to that event. The case of Titus, in itself, explains the issue under consideration and brings clarity to it. Titus' case is examined in this message. We learn here that legalism and grace are mutually exclusive. It is one (an all sufficient salvation wrought by Christ and graciously offered to sinners) or it is the other (futile efforts to save oneself upon the grounds of one's doing). The case of Titus tells us that, 'none but Jesus, none but Jesus, none but Jesus, can do helpless sinners good.'
