A Definition of Preaching - Part Two

The second part of my definition of preaching gives the proximate, or most immediate, purpose for preaching. We preach to people in the congregation "in order to change their thinking, bridle their emotions, and alter their wills." This section of my definition of preaching follows the Shorter catechism: Effectual calling is the work of Gods Spirit whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, He doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ offered to us in the gospel.
