The Names and Titles of Christ, Pt 2

44

Son of God is a title of Christ describing His relationship to the Heavenly Father. It is used throughout the scriptures, but it does not always apply to the Lord Jesus. Sons of God have reference to those who are within the covenant community, and this is the normal meaning used in the Book of Genesis. A second meaning refers to angelic beings or ministering spirits whether good or evil. God also calls Israel His firstborn son a subtle difference from the first definition. The king that reigns on David's throne is also referred to as a son of God, but this is not simply a reference to David's heir but to the eternal reign of the Messiah. Within the New Testament the title Son of God entails the eternal Lordship and Deity of Christ which God the Father attested to at the baptism of Christ, but it also references the created humanity of Christ at His birth.
