Does equivocal swearing of a creed or confession increase, or decrease, liberty of conscience? What is mental reservation in oath taking, and what is wrong with it? What is the way forward for the return to creedal authority within the Reformed church?
Is swearing good or bad? It depends on how you swear. Because God's name is great we must not use it in trivial matters. But in weighty matters using God's name in oaths and vows may be necessary to prove your sincerity and fulfill God's holy will.
Oaths and vows may be distinguished. An oath is a promise we make in God's presence; a vow is a promise made directly to God. Vows are typically made voluntarily (Deut. 23:21–23) while oaths may be "imposed by lawful authority"
But given their similarity and to avoid repetition they can be studied together.
Jesus calls His disciples to speak the truth from their hearts. We may be tempted to think that this passage concerning oaths is outdated and irrelevant for today. Not so! This passage is critically important for daily life and to witness to an unbelieving world.

But let your "Yes," be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment.
