Advent is almost here, my thoughts are in a surprising place

God's Kingdom will stand forever. This truth is essential for Christians because it reminds us that at all times, including the dark ones, our Lord is sovereign and in control.

This is a sermon likening what happened to Peter to what happened to us this past week, as we learned of our daughter's taking of her own life.

This message is about dealing with feelings of loneliness when you have no fellowship, no family, or no friends. We look at many examples in the Bible of people who were in lonely situations.

Pain is often thought of as a curse when it can be a blessing, because it brings pressure to our body, mind, emotions, and even our spirits. Nevertheless, there is pressure when there is pain and it cannot be ignored. Satan attacks Job's possessions. He kills his children. Job refuses to give in. He comes back for round two and attacks his body and through his wife, attacks his soul. Again, Job is steadfast. Then Satan attacks his spirit and does so through the people Job trusts the most and their influence creates doubt that heretofore, Job never considered. The pressure caused by pain can be devastating not so much on your possessions, or your physique, or even your soul. Where it is most devastating is what it can do to your spirit.

The scriptures clearly teach us not to say, 'let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die,' and reminds us that 'bad company corrupts good morals'. Today we are reminded that we must not allow friends, family, pastors, governments, others, and even ourselves to lead us astray and allow our good morals to be corrupted. Rather we stand on what is right and wrong, true and false. There is an afterlife and we must be prepared for it.

What is the purpose of human life? We often default to acting like the goal is little more than happiness and health. Or trying to be a good person, whatever that means. Naturalistic evolution says there isn't a reason or purpose for our lives since we are here by chance. The Bible says we were created to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. It is in savoring God – and being satisfied in him – that we find our purpose.
