Dr. Schoeffler resumes the study of "The Cross of Christ" by John Stott (ISBN 9780830833207 or 9780877849988). We consider what Christ experienced in the garden of Gethsemane just before his crucifixion, and discuss what is God's cup of wrath.
Note: We experienced a technology interruption during the stream so unfortunately the last part of the sermon is not part of the recording. Most of it is here, though, and the PDF of the sermon is posted to read the last part in text form.
The sermon topic is Robert Barnes, a martyr during the Reformation and how he stood firm in the faith. The words in Revelation 2:8-11 to the church at Smyrna are applicable to what Barnes and other martyrs in history have faced.
We are to identify with / be thoughtful of / be prayerful for those who are suffering for the name of Christ. Wherever they are, we are to consider what they are going through and bear this burden with them. Following the brief message, Dr. Pat, a missionary to the persecuted Christians of various countries, will share her testimony of what is happening today.
Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives for this country. But the day often seems long on celebrations and short on memories. This lesson focuses on how to remember to be grateful. The story of ten lepers healed by Jesus illustrates the significance of remembering to be thankful. James 1:22-23 shows how to remember to be thankful. Celebrating a day to remember sacrifices made for you requires a lifestyle of sacrifice from you.
