The Heidelberg Catechism expounds the ninth commandment as being against "all lying and deceit" but also as being against damaging, or not promoting, our neighbor's good name.
The Hessian Catechism of 1607 takes a similar approach in Q.19:
"We shall fear and love God, so that we do not wrongly lie to, betray, slander, or make an evil reputation of our neighbor, but rather shall excuse him, speak good of him, and turn everything to his benefit."
