Are you lost when you wonder what you can believe is true. African Psychology, for example, bases its procedures upon fourteen different sources of truth. However, these very uncertain sources of truth only support one of four different views of African Psychology. This is a tiny field of study when looking at the larger field of psychology, let alone all other fields of academic study worldwide. Yet the church has one source. One book. One perfect source that is described in Psalm 19 by six titles, with six characteristics and it performs six different functions. Come back to truth. Come back to God. Come back to revival. Come back to joy. Come back to wisdom.

After 100 years of Freud and Skinner, there isn't much of humanist psychology except for a crowd of expensive pill-dispensers. In the 1960s, one man sparked a reformation of Biblical counseling that continues in many shapes and forms to this day. This man was Dr. Jay Adams. Here Kevin Swanson interviews Dr. Adams on the current state of Christian counseling, the common mistakes made by Christian counselors, the effectiveness of solid Biblical counseling, and the breakdown of modern evangelicalism by the sharp separation between justification and sanctification…usually ignoring sanctification altogether in the process.

Change always demands a deeper understanding of the things of God and a more careful application of those truths to our lives. Change is a lifelong process and won't be over until we're in glory. As we encourage change, dealing with the needs of the present moment is not the highest priority but it is answering God's call to holiness (Lev 11:44).

As the Lord’s called-out community of people, we are called to help each other grow up; we are called to know and be known by each other. We are called to be instruments of change for each other’s good – to make a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters. But for many of us, our experience of church life falls woefully short of the significant, life-changing, mutual ministry which is the central thought of Ephesians 4. One reform that is desperately needed in the church of Jesus Christ today, requires that we as its members, become wise in the face-to-face curing of souls. It is exactly because the people of God have neglected this admittedly uncomfortable practice, that psychotherapists and psychologists become so attractive. The Bible provides the perfectly balanced model for the work of the ministry and in particular the ministry of the Word in the church. It reveals a seamless joining of the specialized competency of pastors and teachers publicly proclaiming the Word, with the church community and peers speaking the truth in love to one another. As Paul writes to the Roman church, I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. (Rom 15:14). Brothers and sisters, let us labor together to make this aspect of the ministry of the Word to one another a reality.
