How should an older woman conduct herself? Titus 2:3–5 looks forward to the second serial reading of in morning public worship on the coming Lord's Day. In these two verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that an older woman should conduct herself with such holiness and gentleness as encourages younger women to devote themselves to their crucial character and work.

God assigned different roles to men and women in the home, the church, and society. In the church, the men are to preach in the worship services and the women are not to preach. God made that clear in His Word, but many churches are ordaining women to be pastors. This message explains God's design in His church.

This week we continue our exposition of Paul's letter to Titus, focusing on Titus 1:6. Last week we saw that elders (pastors) are a gift of Christ to His church, whose function in part is to help the church be well-ordered. But what type of Christian can lead the church? That is the question we will start to answer in today's message. Do the same standards we expect of our leaders also apply to other Christians? Do we tend to create rules or qualifications that aren't found in Scripture? Can women be pastors? Does the way one's marriage and own home life are lived out impact whether or not he should be leading in God's house? There is much confusion in today's church concerning the role of women. However, the Scripture is clear when it defines the various roles that men and women are to fulfill within the church and the home. Women play a critical role, that if it is not filled leads to the downfall of families, then the church, and ultimately the society itself. Join us as we look to see what the Scriptures say concerning this important topic.

God's covenant with old Israel and their exodus from Egypt through the sea to the land promised to Abraham provides types (in KJV as "examples" and "ensamples") for the church, new Israel, to be applied to God's people, his covenant community. All were under the old covenant and all in the community are under the new covenant: both individuals and households. Beginning with faith and continuing with works, all are to believe and do what God has commanded. Yet, within the covenant community, there are those who do not believe and do not do what God commands and they receive the wrath and vengeance of God as a result of their unfaithfulness and rebellion. As it was in old Israel, so it is in the Israel of God, the church. The church, its households, and its individuals within its community, are those who are the blessed witnesses of the transition from the type of the old Jewish and pagan ages to the reality of the new Christian age, and therefore are accountable to God to obey him in both type and command.

God is a God of Order and the local church is God's household so He wants the church to follow His order. Paul tells Timothy what God expects of men and women in the context of worship in the local church.
