From the earliest times people have concluded that to be right with God we have to do more good than bad and have missed the fact that God gives Himself to us. His love is not earned or unearned. His love is there available to whoever wants it. At the same time, along with the gift, the LORD wants each of us to take that gift seriously and use it to its greatest potential and impact. This leads to a uniques conversation and discussion with our group of men as to how we can have a more thorough knowledge of God when we take Him seriously.
Moses explains what all of Israel should do, not only for the upcoming tenth plague, but for the memorial services for the years to come. After all this preparation, the final plague comes. The angel of death goes throughout the land and strikes down all who did not obey. Since this event happened thousands of years ago, how is it applicable to us today?
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools,
Daniel 3:8-12 " Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.
9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever.
10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, shall fall down and worship the golden image:
11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up."
2 Peter 2:1-9 " But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4 ¶ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:"
The true idea of a blessing is one that has been lost in our age and culture. It is left as a linguistic nicety, a courtesy, an open ended wish for something good. But we fail to understand the depth and power of the blessing and so rob it of both its innate power AND our appreciation of its beauty and declarative force to convey the true power of God to do good to those who love Him. Before we can appreciate the wonder of Abram being blessed by Melchizedek, we need to understand just what a blessing is, and what it conveys. And maybe, we might even learn to recapture the awesome gift of blessing.
Peter is not talking about an entirely new heavens and earth which will replace the ones that were annihilated at the Second Coming. Christ came, the first time, to save the world. A clarification of misunderstood terms like fire, elements, and new heavens and earth will help us to see what Peter is actually describing.
As Abram returned from defeating the four kings and rescue of Lot, Bera the king of Sodom went out to meet him. Before this king could say a word to Abram, Melchizedek interposed with bread and wine. He testified of the Lord Jesus Christ who redeemed his people through his death and sacrifice on the cross. Melchizedek then blessed Abram. He declared the glory of God in delivering Abram's enemies into his hand. This was a complete refreshing for Abram. By Christ, Abram endured the enticing offer of Bera, king of Sodom. Abram glorified God who gave him the victory through Christ. Christ is always the victory and rejoicing of the saints of God.
Join as us we consider Paul's exhortation that it is not the ceremonies, but rather in Christ Jesus, faith working through love that brings us real experience of the righteousness Christ has won for us.
What should we learn about Jesus from the fulfillments of Scripture that Matthew identifies? Matthew 2:12–23 looks forward to the morning sermon on the coming Lord's Day. In these twelve verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that we should read all of Scripture in the light of Christ.
Today we're taking a closer look at the eighteenth chapter of the Book of Ezekiel.
