In the civil war, the Lord's intervention reduced Benjamin from overconfidence to disaster.

Though God is sovereign in salvation, we are still responsible to respond to Him as our Creator and our Potter.

Puritan Hard Drive at http://ow.ly/fPY4o
If you love the Bible, then you may well be Reformed. If you think of yourself as Reformed, but you have seldom or have never read older Reformed literature, prepare to be challenged. The Puritan Hard Drive provides primary sources and depth of theological and spiritual insight which is lacking in much of what is passed off as genuine Reformed theology. If you think of yourself as conservative, the older Puritan and Reformed authors will help you sort reality from myth in your quest to be truly Reformed. There are more solid resources for less money here than anywhere else. I highly recommend you take responsibility for your soul and spend a few shekels for this cup of cold water in the midst of the modern religious desert.

If you want to understand Reformed theology (i.e., the whole counsel of God) the Puritan Hard Drive is unsurpassed, outside the Bible itself. The First and Second Reformations gave us the most faithful Scriptural teaching and preaching since the time of the Apostles, and there is no other resource, outside Scripture itself, where you can find so much of God's truth as in the Puritan Hard Drive (http://ow.ly/fPY4o).
May the Lord continue to use this most profitable tool to promote a Third Reformation that encompasses the whole world (Isaiah 2:2-4)!

'I was one of those who had profited much from using the plethora of out-of-print Reformation materials offered by Still Waters Revival Books in the 62 CDs (Puritan CDs and Reformation CDs)...
With the CDs, it took a little while to go to the index of each set, locate the documents I needed, and then find the correct CD. Of course, the time was always well spent in finding that particular document that I needed.
However, now that I have the Puritan Hard Drive (http://ow.ly/fPY4o), I am able to use my time much more efficiently in finding that particular document I need by quickly searching for it and finding it in a matter of seconds. It's like going from 'dial up' to 'high-speed' Internet!
And for all of those documents that have a font that are in block letters, I am able to simply cut and paste from the Puritan Hard Drive to my own document with ease. ...

III. Understanding Ordinary and Extraordinary Providences (Paragraph 3).
a. God's use of means – ‘God in his ordinary Providence maketh use of means'
b. God's prerogative to suspend the ordinary use of means – ‘yet is free to work without, above and against them at his pleasure'
IV. The Mystery of Providence: The Place of Sin (Paragraph 4).
a. God's predetermination and sin – his determinate Councel extendeth itself even to the first fall, and all other sinful actions of both Angels and Men'
b. God's sovereignty over sin and its effects – ‘(and that not by a bare permission) which he wisely and powerfully boundeth, and otherwise ordereth, and governeth, in a manifold dispensation to his most holy ends'
c. God is not the author of sin – ‘yet so, as the sinfulness of their acts proceedeth only from the Creatures, and not from God; who being most holy and righteous, neither is nor can be, the author or the approver of sin.'

'Large crowds of people often gathered for these expositions. Volume five... is the best compilation of Puritan systematic theology ever written, but
unfortunately is often overlooked in Puritan studies.... This six volume set represents Puritan preaching at its best... Puritan pastors treasured
the full scope of God's counsel.... (They) stove for... excellence. They also made their sermons practical enough to answer the questions of listeners in a thoroughly scriptural manner.'
Dr. Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson, Meet the Puritans: With a Guide To Modern Reprints, pp. 637-639.
The Preface notes, 'This celebrated collection of useful and orthodox theology consists… of practical as well as doctrinal discourses, preached by some of the most eminent divines of the 17th century.'
Included are rare sermons by John Owen, Thomas Watson, Thomas Manton, Matthew Poole, Stephen Charnock, Richard Baxter, William Greenhill, James Janeway, Edmund Calamy, Thomas Vincent and 65 other notable Puritan ministers.

John Owen, in his preface to this treatise writes, 'I do freely declare my judgement that for order, method, perspicuity in treating, and solidity of argument, the ensuing discourse exceedeth whatsoever single treatise I have seen written with the same design' (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p.337).
In this volume Gillespie proves:
That there is such a Covenant (of Redemption).
2 The necessity of it.
The nature, properties, and parties thereof.
The tenor, articles, subject matter of Redemption,
The commands, conditions, and promises annexed.
The harmony of the Covenant of suretiship made with Christ, and the Covenant of reconciliation made with sinners: wherein they agree, wherein they differ.
Grounds of comfort from the Covenant of suretiship; and, of course, much, much more!
Owen underscores the importance of this work when he writes, 'For the Doctrine hereof, or the truth herein, is the very Center wherein all the lines concerning the Grace of God and our own duty, do meet; wherein the whole of Religion doth consist.'

CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON ON READING
'As the apostle says to Timothy, so also he says to everyone, 'Give
yourself to reading.' He who will not use the thoughts of other men's
brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers, and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.'
