After the brief glimpse of the Son's rays at the conclusion of chapter 1, the Teacher leads us once again into the fog found in life "under the sun." Is life truly just a chasing after the wind? or will the Teacher give us another peek behind the fog of "hebel?" As we'll see in this chapter, it is only through exploring disillusionment that we can honestly confront reality.

We need to look at this joy in the light of what it means spiritually. Because carnal (worldly) joy which is temporal, depends on circumstances and feelings has a way of waning losing it's effects on the person. That which God gives is everlasting, and is not dependent on circumstances and feelings, and emotions. It can include these but the precept is larger.

Their ability to do good works is not at all of themselves, but wholly from the Spirit of Christ; and that they may be enabled thereunto, besides the graces they have already received, there is necessary an actual influence of the same Holy Spirit, to work in them to will and to do of His good pleasure; yet they are not hereupon to grow negligent, as if they were not bound to perform any duty, unless upon a special motion of the Spirit, but they ought to be diligent in stirring up the grace of God that is in them.

As the human body was made to live by its consumption of water, and dies when deprived of it, so the human soul was made to live by its consumption of God, and dies when deprived of Him. Additional Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-15

We know we're supposed to fear God and love God—but enjoy Him? While the idea of enjoying God might strike some as odd or even inappropriate, this command to delight ourselves in God is central to the every command in Scripture. If we miss this, we miss it all.

So, here we see the sovereignty of God. He has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all. And so, interestingly, the exhortation that David gives here is to the angels; that they would bless the Lord, because they do excel in strength. They do perform His word. They do this, heeding the voice of His word. David calls them the Lord's hosts. He calls them His ministers who do His pleasure. And so, I am sure, that this is exactly what they do. They bless the Lord for their own ability to do what He commands perfectly. Their boast is not in themselves, but in God who made them and directs them to their responsibilities in perfect wisdom.

If we are to glorify Christ, we must be equipped. Be serious in prayer, have a fervent love for one another, and use our gift of ministry given to us by God.

We see that the Lord takes pleasure in us when we truly take pleasure in HIm. When we do so we find that the Lord fights for us and gives us victory.
