The appalling human injustice of Pilate knowingly sentencing an innocent man to death in the place of a guilty one subserved God's great and just purpose of freeing us from our deserved condemnation through the substitution of Christ.

Christ was delivered to be crucified according to the gracious will and purpose of God the Father. Pilate wrote the reason for his crucifixion and put it on the cross. Christ was crucified because he is The King of the Jews. The Jews who rejected Christ wanted Pilate to change it. But the man who bent to every desire of the Jews up until that point refused their request now. God determined that all men should know exactly why his Son was crucified. He is The King of the Jews! There are many comforting truths that are declared to Sinners in the title and superscription written above the head of Christ. It was put there by the determinate will of God for a crown of glory upon the head of our King.

Christians are ruled by the truth, not the mob.

It is difficult for us to enter into what our Lord suffered for his people on the cross. We that believe in Christ shall never know the forsaking of the Father, because he was forsaken for us. Prior to the cross however, our Lord and Christ endured great suffering at the hands of Pilate and the soldiers who beat and mocked him. As we take notice of their peculiar actions they serve as emblems. An emblem is an object whose picture gives us an understanding of something. Something that is made clearer by the use of the emblem. These emblems serve to give us a sense of what Christ endured and accomplished for his people on the cross.

Pilate was the face of the world's most powerful empire - Rome. When the Jews brought the Lord to Pilate seeking to have Christ crucified, Pilate did all he could to "set Him free." But, in the end, he was unable to stop the Lord's crucifixion. Why?

The trial of Christ by the Jews and Pilate reveals the wicked heart of the natural man. What we are in the flesh is exposed by Christ and his gospel. Only a new heart, by the grace of God reveals love, hope and faith in us, which looks to Christ rather than this world. By the grace of God in Christ, we shall look to him in true, spiritual faith born from above.

We've been studying how God's truth is found in God's law and how that truth should affect our conduct every day of the week, including Lord's Day worship. But there is a more fundamental question we need to settle if we will listen to God: "What is truth?" Pontius Pilate asked Jesus that question 2,000 years ago. But it is the question of the ages. And especially today there is great confusion about the truth. "While most arguments throughout history have been disputes between rival claims to truth, postmodernism rejects the very notion of truth as a fixed universal, or objective absolute." In fact, today the embrace of truth is seen as a power move used by racists, fascists, and classists. Anyone promoting objective truth, it often assumed today, must be trying to preserve their privilege. And a basic understanding of truth is especially critical for young people who are trying to figure out their way in the world. Who should young people listen to? In a world where lies about gender and sexuality are accepted as non-negotiable, how can you stay true to God?

The humiliation of Christ in the apostle's creed helps us see how low Christ descended that we may have hope at our lowest point, and by the power and treasure that He is, renounce all to take hold of Christ.

Teaching on Matthew 27:62-28:10

Jesus stands before Pilate and bears witness to the truth. Pilate has no interest in the truth, nor do the Jewish leaders. The question for everyone is this---How will you respond to the truth?

What will you do with Jesus? The Jewish leadership hated him, Pilate found him a problem, and the people then, as now preferred Barabbas. The soldiers mocked him, yet he is the King who alone can save all his people.
