Continuing in our study of apostolic preaching, we note other features which come to the fore in Peter's preaching at Pentecost. It is Christian and adoring, fervent, ardent, urgent, full of Christ. It is applied and direct, spoken boldly and plainly. It is affectionate and gracious, holding out gospel hope. It is blessed and fruitful, owned by the Holy Spirit to the salvation of thousands. It is an enduring example, and gives us a great confidence.

As the Promise of the Father is given, we note the significance of the time and the group, consider the symbolism of the sound and the sight, then assess the Spirit and the speech, concluding by looking at the crowd and the truth. The risen Christ pours out his Spirit on the church, and that gift is our heavenly birthright and inheritance.

In order to avoid destruction Wisdom (Jesus Christ) cries aloud so we will repent and change direction. Wisdom also warns us of the danger of spurning reproof. Finally, if we listen to Wisdom she promises to pour out the Spirit, give understanding of God's Word and a life without dread of disaster.

We can think of the present day as "the day of the Lord" in a sense, since it is the glorious eschaton in which the gospel is made known in all its fullness and the Spirit works in a new and special way. This is why Peter in an address to Jews claims the Pentecost outpouring of the Spirit to be a fulfilment of Joel's prophecy. Yet individual events can each be known as the day of the Lord, as Joel says, and they are therefore all manifestations of one great theological theme which find their culmination in the end-time judgement of God. God delivers his elect and houses them in the fortress which is himself. They watch in safety as God judges those who reject him, and for this reason we say that God truly is a refuge for all who trust in him.

We must look to the Bible to find out who the Holy Spirit is and what he does.
