It explains what a bishop is, and the qualifications needed for the office of a bishop in a local church. 1 Timothy 3:1-7 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. A Deacon's first testing ground and ongoing chief priority in his ministry is overseeing the service of his own household, so that he may be well-equipped to oversee the service of a congregation of households that maintain the same covenantal priority.

1 Timothy lists the character required to serve as a deacon in Christ's church. These are traits necessary in every Christian but especially essential in those men and women who serve as deacons.

CHRIST GAVE GIFTED MEN AS GIFTS TO THE CHURCH. A. WHERE DO THESE GIFTS COME FROM? B. WHAT OR WHO ARE THESE GIFTS THAT WERE FREELY GIVEN TO THE CHURCH? C. WHY DOES CHRIST GIVE THESE MEN AS GIFTS TO THE CHURCH?

After we see the need for a pastor to be a qualified man, we also see that he must be a concerned man, who cares for and about the flock of God.

But with this growth brought problems: some of the widows in the church were being neglected in the distribution. Rather that becoming a reason for anger and division, through the guidance of the Spirit, God raised up another office in the church, the Deacon. These first seven men were called and ordained with the laying on of hands to serve and care for the needs of the people. With their help, the church continued to grow.

Being an elder is a good (beneficial) work (labor), for which the Lord prepares good (grace-formed character) men (males).

If you aspire to be a pastor, elder, or teacher in the church and you don't have the maturity to control your tongue; then James offers a stern warning that ought to be heeded.

Deacons must be male, and full of the Holy Spirit as identified by the markers that the Scripture gives of a Spirit-filled life.

I. Rejection of the Son of God. A. The false charge of blasphemy. B. The false pride of office. II. Responsibility for His crucifixion. A. Fearing men instead of God. B. Ridicule instead of righteousness.
