Elohim is the first name of God we find in our Bible. It reveals Him as the almighty, eternal, creator God. He is the beginning of all things and the reason all things exist. Each one of us is truly created by Him. He is the creator of both the first creation and also of the new creation. El Elyon presents Him as the Most High God, the ruler of all His creation and is first mentioned by Melchizadek.

IN this sermon we look at the implications Jesus being a priest after the order of Melchizadec

Returning to Hebrews 5 and the perfect priesthood of Christ, we will focus on the necessary qualification of Christ's appointment as High Priest. The author of Hebrews, inspired by the Holy Spirit, refers back to Psalm 110 in order to demonstrate the appointment of Christ.

As we enter the 5th chapter of the Letter to the Hebrews, we start by looking at the High Priesthood of Christ. Immediately, the author speaks of the qualifications that must be met for any legitimate High Priest; all of these qualifications were fully met by Jesus, who was appointed to His office by our heavenly Father.

Main Point: Recognize your King; receive His blessing. Melchizedek, Priest of the Most High God, enjoyed a perpetual priesthood (Verse 3). He was both King of Righteousness and King of Peace (Verses 2). He was without father, mother, genealogy, beginning of days, and end of life (Verse 3). He received tithes on behalf of God Most High (Verse 2). He bestowed blessing upon Abraham (Verse 1). He was “made like the Son of God”; He points you to Christ, your true King (Verse 3). Main Point: Recognize your King; receive His blessing.

Today we looked at how Christ was not after the priesthood of the law, but after the priesthood of a promise from God.

In all of the New Testament there are only five times that tithing is mentioned. Three times in the Gospels they are mentioned in passages concerning the Pharisees as they are indicted for their adherence to the Law in this area while failing miserably in the more important areas. In Hebrews we find them mentioned in connection with the tithes that Abraham paid to Melchizadek, and by so doing Levi, carried in Abraham's loins, paid tithes to Melchizadek thus illustrating the superiority of the New Covenant over the Old Covenant. So we find no passage that instructs us to pay tithes as members of the Body of Christ today. If Israel and the Church are the same then tithes today may be in order, but if the Church, operating not under the Old Testament Law but under the grace of God, is separate from Israel then giving as one has purposed in His heart is the mandate for today. We give because we love the Lord and people not because we have to.

Christ is more qualified than Moses to be the source of eternal salvation, for He is a high priest after the order of Melchizadek.
