Jesus has just finished teaching the masses from inside the ship and it was getting late. He knew that at this time He needed to head over to the other side to take care of business over there. So He instructed His disciples to sail over. Mark tells us that it wasn't just their boat that went though, there were other little ships going as well. Our faith or lack thereof has an affect on others.

Merchandising the People — Marketing Themselves — False Teachers False teachers market themselves. How? The market themselves by marketing a way of life that appeals to the natural man. They give and feed man with what he wants in this life. The basic longings of the flesh — acceptance, power, fearlessness, wealth, control, health, popularity to name a few. How do they do it? Do they outright deny the Lord? No... they simply elevate a way of life and thinking, in the Lord's name, that feeds the natural affections of humanity that reigns superior in the lives of those they are falsely misleading. They deny the Lord, His message and calling to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him by marketing their way of life and enterprise, that FIRST benefits the false teacher, who is becomes the example of this success, that natural appeals to what their followers want most out of life. They feed those drawn to their success with tips, principles, practices, examples and clever advice on how to have and take possession of what they have by investing in them and their way of thinking and living. The ministry of Jesus consisted of teaching/preaching and of healing/miracles. The miracles were not primarily displays of compassion but signs of the identity of Jesus. Christianity at its core is not about physical and social dynamics; it is at its core a matter of responding with faith and obedience to the words of God.

At the beginning of this chapter the super spiritual brethren were complaining about Jesus hanging out with the no-goods, the sinners, the scum of the earth, and the unwashed masses. What they missed was that Jesus came for that bunch just as much as He came for them. The difference was the people in that crowd realized their situation and turned to God in the flesh for help, thus leading up to this great three part parable. In this closing section of the parable we are shown a certain father and his rebellious son, a son who walked away from his dad but after awhile decided to come home. At that point we are shown how his father had been on the look out for the boy and then he did the strangest thing, he ran to him. While the son came slowly with no expectations only a wish, Daddy cast his pride and status to the side to go get his son.

Much is made of making disciples and of discipling others. What kind of Christian are we then trying to produce? We read in Acts 11:26 tells us that in Antioch “the disciples were first called Christians.” What this tells us is that before we were called Christians we were called disciples. In Matthew 5:1,2 we learn that the Lord Jesus moved himself from the crowds that had massed around him and the disciples gathered to him on the mount. Again here we see a difference from the many who massed around Christ and the few who were his disciples. The question is “What is a disciple?” 1. The disciple is a person who comes out from those who mass around Jesus to adhere to him. They are a narrower group than those that group around Christ. 2.
