A discussion about head coverings

In this lesson, we begin looking at the place of men and women in the church (e.g. why church officers are men, in what sense there is "no male and female" in Christ, etc.), looking at Galatians 3:28, 1 Timothy 2:8-3:15, and 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. We will pick up with the same topic next week.

The sermon begins with some preliminary considerations and is followed by an explanation of the text. Over the course of several months leading up to this sermon I read some very good material, but I also listened to a number of sermons. One man in particular is quoted several times in the sermon. That man (unnamed in the sermon) is Paul Dowling. His series on the subject was immensely helpful. I quoted him a number of times; but I listened to him enough times that there may be points where I also unconsciously borrowed from him. All that to say, there is nothing new here. I have simply attempted to faithfully and succinctly explain the Biblical basis for the practice of wearing headcoverings. But there are others who have done a better job. A point of clarification: I should not have said that I do not want to guilt women into doing something they don’t want to do. Guilt, if it is a product of the Spirit’s working, is a very healthy thing, and every preacher should preach in the hope that sinners will be brought under conviction. And if God has told us to do it - whatever it may be - we should do it whether we want to or not! And then pray earnestly that God would help us to want to do it. What we should avoid is the hypocrisy that leads to inconsistency: wearing a head covering at this church because the pastor says I should (and the congregation expects me to) only to take it off when out of view of the pastor and congregation.

The abiding tradition that Paul was inculcating here for the church at Corinth, was that observing the appropriate God-given and apostle-taught traditions would lead them further to consider when the symbols of headship and submission would need to be observed by both the men and the women in various situations which might require it.

It is best to understand that Paul is here referring to activities of believers in ministry before the Lord and the public, where a clear testimony is essential. In the most general senses praying is talking to God about people, including ourselves, and prophesying is talking to people about God. One is vertical (man to God) and the other is horizontal (man to man), and they represent the two primary dimensions of believers' ministry. Admittedly, the detail of this passage related to head coverings is difficult because of the scarcity of historical data. But the content helps to clarify the principle Paul has in mind, whatever the special covering may have been. In chapter 11, Paul begins to address another area of impropriety among the Corinthians: the conduct of women of the flock in public worship. It appears that some women, perhaps excited with their status as equal participants in the church of Christ, were choosing to put off the veil, which was the recognized symbol of submission in their culture, and they were presuming to pray and prophesy with uncovered heads in the worship services. This message develops the passage and attempts to make application to our culture. In the process, it deals with issues of creation, of headship, and of the current blurring of the roles God has given to males and females.

What does Paul mean in this section of First Corinthians about their women not praying and prophesying with their heads uncovered? What was the context, the relationship to headship, and is there a continuing application of this principle for the church today?
