We saw last time the extraordinary promise made to the Mediator that in Him God would do marvelous things, exceedingly marvelous things. The Lord immediately then describes the terms of the covenant once more, in language by and large quoted from ch. 23 or from ch. 13. There is not really anything new in this passage; it is a repetition of material we've already seen. Why? Because God is reiterating the rules that would keep Israel from repeating a golden-calf style incident. The idolatrous outburst revealed what was inside His people's hearts — and clearly, God at least believes that reiterating the law is part of the solution to that problem. The law is not given outside the forgiveness and love that comes through the Mediator; but it is part of the total package. As part of renewing the covenant with Israel, then, God reiterates the law of the covenant so that His people can faithfully keep that covenant.

Gavin says, "we are commanded…in I Peter 2:17, 'Fear God. "In the matters focused on today in Old Testament Messianic Prophecies Parts 12a, 12b, & 12c, the Old Testament points at Isaiah 11:2 in what contains both specificity & yet is also a shadowy way to the details of how the specificity was to be worked out in Christ's public ministry, & so from Isaiah 11:2 we can identify in it Jesus Christ of Nazareth as the prophesied Messiah, though we don't find the greater detail that we thank God we now have in the 4 Holy Gospels ... ." "And so we shall in today's 3 sermons, be considering in connection with Isaiah 11:2 & Revelation 4:5 & 5:6, the fact that 1stly, with respect to the issue of Messianic prophecy, the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit are found in a special prophetic way in the anointing by the Spirit of the Christ as foretold in Isaiah 11:2; & 2ndly, as taught in such Book of Revelation references as Revelation 4:5 & 5:6, in a derivative way the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit are more generally found in Christian believers."

If we don't understand the Holy Spirit and his ministry, we won't know how to view his actions today. Many people think that the Spirit's work has entirely changed between the Old and New Testaments. So to clear up some misunderstandings, today we look at both the Old and New Testament to see how the Spirit's ministry is alike and how it is different. With this clarity, we are able to better understand how He is working today.

Ephesians 4 v 7-10 -- Spiritual Gifts. Christ gives spiritual gifts to each and every one of his children. We are to use these gifts to glorify the Lord, edify His people, and extend His Kingdom.

In order to encourage the church in the present, and prepare them for the instruction and correction to come, the Apostle Paul lays the theological groundwork of God's work in the past and faithful promises for the future.

There is a relationship established between the giver and the receiver, between the gift given and the gift applied. It is a nuanced relationship and needs some thought. We considered the privilege of being God's people last week, but there is also privilege in the service of God, both in the service directly in occupations of Kingdom labor, and in the participation in that labor through acts of support. In other words, HOW you give, and how you think about the giving matters as much as what you give. There is submission worked into giving, not submission to the person in our setting, but submission to Him who is represented and to the Kingdom which is the ultimate goal of all. This submission must then also apply to those who lead, to those who are the ones supported by the gifts.

The Bible talks about the Holy Ghost or Spirit, but should we think of the Spirit in terms of a who or a what? Scripture reveals the nature of the Spirit, which is what we consider this evening!

The visible church is an institution. This organization has structure. It has leaders, doctrine, and rules for membership. As unpopular as it might be to say, Christianity is a religion (see ch. 25). But Christianity is also essentially relational. And the religious and relational aspects of the church are not at odds. Within the God-ordained organization of the church is a living organism. Scripture calls the church a body; a living body has intimate connection between its various parts and the head as the command center. The church is a family; in any well-functioning body there is both a form of government and loving communion. It isn't enough to belong to the organization of the church—to be a member of what the Apostles' Creed calls "the holy catholic church." We must also practice "the communion of saints."

CHRIST GAVE GIFTED MEN AS GIFTS TO THE CHURCH. A. WHERE DO THESE GIFTS COME FROM? B. WHAT OR WHO ARE THESE GIFTS THAT WERE FREELY GIVEN TO THE CHURCH? C. WHY DOES CHRIST GIVE THESE MEN AS GIFTS TO THE CHURCH?

In this sermon, we see God is good and gives good gifts.
