Living is being at peace with God! What a blessed day we live in!

"But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept." (Genesis 33:4)

God will often mercifully restrict the amount of negative consequences we experience when we have made foolish or even sinful choices. At the same time, just because we haven't yet experienced any negative consequences from a foolish or sinful choice, we are unwise to think that such consequences won't come. They often do, and they may last much longer than we think they will, perhaps even for the rest of our lives.  Jacob experienced a great period of joy and prosperity working for his uncle Laban toward marrying Rachel. Then his uncle's deception shattered those peaceful, joyful times, and truly left Jacob with consequences--stored up from his own deception of his brother and father--that would last him the rest of his life.  Additionally, Jacob, like his forefathers before him, and like many of the nation of Israel after him, was working for the peace and prosperity of the family and land where he was placed.  We too are called to work for the peace and prosperity of the land where we are placed, even though, like so many of the faithful, we are longing for a better country, a heavenly one.

In this sermon, we get a brief overview of the life of Jacob.

This week we complete our study on Edom (Esau) by looking at Esau and his non-relationship with God (in fact Hebrews says he was "void of God").  Can you imagine a prophet writing of you, "...but (you) I have hated"?  Nevertheless, this is what Malachi quoted God, not the prophet, as saying about Esau! Perhaps you always viewed Jacob as the deceiver, but in truth the Bible teaches a much different lesson which we share in this week's installment.

"Then he said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.'" (Genesis 32:28)

There is no more misunderstood section of Scripture than that about Jacob and Esau.  This is part one of that discourse (we will finish the discussion next week), but suffice to say, I teach from a totally different perspective than just about everyone.  This is important because Jacob and Esau are everything you want to be (Jacob) versus everything you do not want to be (Esau).

PM sermons are preceded by a lesson from the Belgic Confession: Article 22: The Righteousness of Faith : We believe that for us to acquire the true knowledge of this great mystery the Holy Spirit kindles in our hearts a true faith that embraces Jesus Christ, with all his merits, and makes him its own, and no longer looks for anything apart from him. For it must necessarily follow that either all that is required for our salvation is not in Christ or, if all is in him, then those who have Christ by faith have his salvation entirely. Therefore, to say that Christ is not enough but that something else is needed as well is a most enormous blasphemy against God— for it then would follow that Jesus Christ is only half a Savior. And therefore we justly say with Paul that we are justified "by faith alone" or "by faith apart from works." However, we do not mean, properly speaking, that it is faith itself that justifies us— for faith is only the instrument by which we embrace Christ, our righteousness. But Jesus Christ is our righteousness in making available to us all his merits and all the holy works he has done for us and in our place. And faith is the instrument that keeps us in communion with him and with all his benefits. When those benefits are made ours, they are more than enough to absolve us of our sins. 23: The Justification of Sinners We believe that our blessedness lies in the forgiveness of our sins because of Jesus Christ, and that in it our righteousness before God is contained, as David and Paul teach us when they declare those people blessed to whom God grants righteousness apart from works. And the same apostle says that we are "justified by his grace..."

The question raised in chapters 31-34 is simple, if you believe God, yet one of the most complex, if you do not.  Do you believe trusting Jehovah trumps trusting men, governments, politicians, you name it? As Isaiah so artfully says, "The Egyptians are men,and not God."

The favoritism shown by Isaac and Rebekah toward Esau and Jacob, respectively, led to lifelong issues in the family. Parents are responsible for training their children not only to obey them when they are very young as if the parent were essentially God, but they are to consciously transition as the children grown and mature to passing them off to God directly. This process may differ from child to child, depending on their maturity level, but it depends most upon the child's spiritual condition. The parents must point their children toward God, and children are never too young to learn about God and His revealed will.

Genesis 27 is a pivotal chapter because: These events directly lead to Jacob leaving for 20 years, marrying his wives and having his 12 sons that become the 12 tribes of Israel. It can be very difficult for many Bible readers to understand how God could still bless Jacob after his behavior in this chapter. If you've ever asked yourself that question, listen to this message, because we actually find out the answer from the apostle Paul in the New Testament writings.

Esau is rejected, Isaac is corrected, and Jacob is blessed. "By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau." (Hebrews 11:20)
