Pastor Scudder continues his incredible series through Acts.

How is pride dangerous? Isaiah 29:1–14 prepares us for the first serial reading in public worship on the Lord's Day. In these fourteen verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that pride puts us in danger of stumbling over the Cornerstone, inventing our own theology, and devising our own worship.

Theme: Every person must carefully consider his or her response to the gospel call that Jesus is the Messiah-King for there are severe consequences to those who reject Him. In vv. 9-16, Jesus gives a condemning parable. Israel is God's vineyard. The servants sent represent the prophets in the OT. The owner's son represents Jesus, and the vineyard owner represents God the Father. The wicked tenants rejected and beat the servants and killed the son. The owner's response would be to destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. The crowd's response to Jesus was "Surely not!". In the history of Israel, God gave the people many times to repent. In application, we need to appreciate God's compassion and patience. We also need to beware of disregarding God's Word. In v. 17, Jesus directs His comments to the unbelievers and quotes from Psalm 118. In application, we need to understand that all Scripture will be fulfilled. In v. 18, Jesus states the application of God's Word. Those who reject the Cornerstone will be crushed by it. We need to grasp the gravity of our response to Christ. In conclusion, we should not let the fear of man keep us from following Christ. He is compassionate and patient. God's patience does have limits; don't presume upon His grace and patience. Turn to Christ, follow Him, and be saved.

Teaching on Ephesians 2:19-22

For the rest of his letter, Peter's gonna talk about 'how to live as Christians in a perverse culture.' But preliminary to living as Christians is grasping our Christian identity. Christians must confidently grasp their new identity in Jesus Christ.

Two sides of the same coin being chosen by god and our freewill to choose Him.

Why didn't things go differently when Jesus entered Jerusalem? Why didn't the leaders of the people acknowledge Christ as the Messiah? It was part of God's sovereign plan, and they did not want to give up their authority. After Jesus would not answer their question about His authority, He told them this allegorical parable. The man in the vineyard (representing God) went to great expense to set up this vineyard, and He rented it out to tenant-farmers. These men were blessed to be stewards of the vineyard, but they went from enjoying the blessing to thinking they were entitled to owning the place. When the owner sent for his portion of the wine – which was contractually obligated – they became defensive and wouldn't give it up. They persecuted and killed the servants (the prophets); and when God finally sent His well-beloved Son into the world, they killed Him too. With ridiculous logic, they thought they would kill the heir and then receive his inheritance. This is what sin does; it twists our thinking and causes us to rationalize and justify what we have done. Jesus took the scribes to school and asked them if they had ever read the 118th Psalm, which speaks of the rejected stone becoming the Chief Cornerstone. They had tossed this stone aside and built up a crooked system of their own. But Jesus now stands before them and says He will bear the weight of the structure and make it square and sturdy. Jesus is still the Chief Cornerstone today! And the vineyard is God's. The Church does not belong to any pastor or man. Every pastor will fail somehow, but Christ is our Head – and we need to keep our eyes on Him!

One must stand upon The Rock to endure the trials of this life; all else is sinking sand. The more we know about that Rock, the surer we stand.

We will also take a short pause in our study of the Canons of Dort. We will start a six-sermon series on "Defining Church Plant". 1 Peter 2.4, 5 will be our first text (of six) of the series. We need to look carefully at how God makes us plant-able soil for the growth we all long for both spiritually and in numbers. To do that we need to look honestly at some very important issues. I ask you each to make it a priority to be in attendance for these important sermons.
