God's covenant with old Israel and their exodus from Egypt through the sea to the land promised to Abraham provides types (in KJV as "examples" and "ensamples") for the church, new Israel, to be applied to God's people, his covenant community. All were under the old covenant and all in the community are under the new covenant: both individuals and households. Beginning with faith and continuing with works, all are to believe and do what God has commanded. Yet, within the covenant community, there are those who do not believe and do not do what God commands and they receive the wrath and vengeance of God as a result of their unfaithfulness and rebellion. As it was in old Israel, so it is in the Israel of God, the church. The church, its households, and its individuals within its community, are those who are the blessed witnesses of the transition from the type of the old Jewish and pagan ages to the reality of the new Christian age, and therefore are accountable to God to obey him in both type and command.

Continuing the Gospel Community series, Matt and Alan get into 1 Thessalonians. Matt and Alan continue and finish up Philippians. What does it look like to work out your salvation? What does it look like to seek the things of Christ? What does it look like to live like Christ is near? What does it look like to offer a well pleasing sacrifice to God?

Troubles and disruption to the peace and unity of the church begin with the daily battles with sin that take place within us. It is only through the Gospel that peace can be restored.

As a result of Christ's love for the church we respond by loving Christ and loving his church.

We are all always being discipled by someone or something. If we are not deliberately following Jesus, we will follow someone else by default. We must choose: what framework, what ways of thinking, what paradigm, will I build my life upon? Jesus and the apostles said the true Way is a communal lifestyle in which we are learning to live in the reality of our new identity in Christ.

The first word in Hebrews 10:19 (therefore) marks a significant turning point in the epistle, as it begins applying the rich theology of the past chapters to the life of the church.

The visible church is an institution. This organization has structure. It has leaders, doctrine, and rules for membership. As unpopular as it might be to say, Christianity is a religion (see ch. 25). But Christianity is also essentially relational. And the religious and relational aspects of the church are not at odds. Within the God-ordained organization of the church is a living organism. Scripture calls the church a body; a living body has intimate connection between its various parts and the head as the command center. The church is a family; in any well-functioning body there is both a form of government and loving communion. It isn't enough to belong to the organization of the church—to be a member of what the Apostles' Creed calls "the holy catholic church." We must also practice "the communion of saints."

How does the Apostle Paul begin what will prove to be a difficult conversation with the Corinthian church? By first going back to how they were first brought to Christ, called in the gospel, joined to community, and united with Christ.
