Leaven is like yeast, it is what causes bread to rise. Metaphorically leaven is used to describe, often times, the sinful influence of one or a group upon another. The Pharisees and Sadducees were such an influence upon those in the days that the Lord walked the earth, their influence being witnessed in the lives of Jesus' disciples. We witness this influence today upon the church in that we do not believe the written record, the Bible, to be trustworthy in regard to what it says, especially about our Lord. Beware!

Hannah (which means Grace) was afflicted by her adversary Peninnah, because Peninnah bore children, but the Lord prevented Hannah from bearing children. This was of the Lord, who gives his church a picture of Christ in the husband, Elkanah. Peninnah pictures the religious who are left to bear fruits of the flesh in religion. Elkanah does something for Hannah he does not do for Peninnah and her children. Elkanah gives Hannah "a worthy portion", which pictures the grace our God gives to his chosen people whom he loves. Being tormented by affliction, Hannah could not eat the spiritual food, which was Christ. But when her husband speaks to her comfortably, she eats. After she eats, then she is moved to a heaven-born prayer confessing, if you will Lord, then I shall bear eternal fruit of my husband.

A present and loving father is a powerful force for good. As we look at Galatians 4:1-7 we see that no matter what our relationship with our earthly Dad may be, in Christ we have a better father in heaven.

Childbearing reminds us of our own and our children's sinfulness, but Christ is the hope not only of regeneration and justification, but of sanctification and glorification.

Broken Vessels Judges 13:1-24;Proverbs 22:6;Proverbs 29:15 Unfortunately, brokenness and pain are universal. It may have been from the pain of abandonment and isolation, the pain of chronic illness or death, or the pain we bring on ourselves through our sin and failure. But we all know what pain feels like, and it feels like being broken.Like clay jars, we are fragile. We can be easily broken—but we do not have to remain "broken vessels." We are never beyond the healing and redeeming power of God. In the face of failure, God responds with restoration.Despite our shortcomings, God will work in and through us. During our circumstances, God will help us endure.God doesn't stop there! He seeks to use us to speak into the lives of other "broken vessels." Manoah and his wife were going to have a child through miraculous divine intervention.We are broken vessels, but this great treasure—the good news of Jesus Christ—shines through our brokenness.Parenting is more than a formula.Parents who depend upon formulas to save their kids, need to follow Gods advice on raising kids.Parents are responsible to raise their childrenproperly.God blesses faithful parents.While parents have an influence on how their children will turn out, they do not have control.Children are responsible for the choices they make.Children grow to make their own life decisions.Sinful kids and sinful parents need grace.The Lord works in mysterious ways.We are all dependent upon Gods grace.

Why did a woman who gave birth need atonement? Leviticus 12:1–8 looks forward to the evening sermon on the coming Lord's Day. In these eight verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that while specific sins need to be forgiven, sinfulness itself also needs to be cleansed.
