I believe I misrepresented the position of another Christian denomination in this sermon (Please read the transcript).
A major goal in raising children is to teach them that Christians are engaged in an ongoing fight with the world, the flesh, and the devil (James 3:15).
The culture of our world has changed profoundly, so that we now reject the standards of Christendom. Romans 1:21-32 teaches that when people reject God and his truth, dire consequences follow.
In Matthew 19:4-6, the Lord Jesus Christ himself quoted Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:24, and affirmed that marriage can only be between a male and a female.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 gives us both a warning about those who continue in sexual sins and great hope by affirming there is power to change.
Young children, obey your parents (v. 1).
All children, honor your parents (vv. 2-3).
Parents in general, and fathers in particular, don't exasperate your children, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (v. 4).
Children: Obey your parents.
Parents: Make obedience easy.
How can fathers help their children fight their sin? Ephesians 6:4 looks forward to another part of the morning sermon on the coming Lord's Day. In this verse of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that since a child's obedience must be in the Lord, fathers must use the Lord's means, in dependence upon the Lord, to help their children fight against their sin.
The Enduring Value of Parental Wisdom
I. The Instructions of Wisdom (1-2)
II. The Methodology of Wisdom (3-4)
III. The Illustration of Wisdom (5ff)
"THE ENDURING VALUE OF PARENTAL WISDOM!"
"1 ¶ My son, keep my words,
And treasure my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and live,
And my law as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
Write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,"
And call understanding your nearest kin,…."
This Lord's Day Pastor Randy will return to the Book of Proverbs. We'll be considering the whole of chapter 7 in one study. The reason for this is that verses 5-27 are mostly illustrative of what life would be like without Wisdom.
If you listen, learn, and remember Wisdom's words and do them, you will be safe from many troubles. The unstated contrast is that if you don't trouble and trials will befall and, and ultimately destroy you.
Happy Mother's Day to all moms. Please take the time to thank God for the moms who influenced your life.
Lamentations 4:1-10 "How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.
2 The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!
3 Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
4 The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.
5 They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.
6 For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
7 Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:
8 Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.
9 They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
10 The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people."
Stop boasting in your independence! It is your independence from the body of Christ which is to your shame and harm! If we isolate ourselves from the body of Christ, the Church, we are unable to minister and to be ministered to by the Word of Christ from those with whom we are to have community. God has ordained the ministry of the saints to one another to be a primary instrument in our growth in Christ.
Now that David has been forced to come face to face with his sin, he seems to be distracted by Joab's war, lulling him into a false sense of security as to God's pronouncement on his family.
This is the Twenty Fifth Sermon in the Series Kingdom, Dynasty and Glory; an exposition on the Second Book of Samuel.
