Ironically, disguise, deception and, of all things, goats have been a favorite approach by Abraham's descendants to control the progression of the Abrahamic blessing. With every attempt, we see God's sovereign hand in control. With Judah's actions in Genesis 38 we see the sweet irony the writer brings out is this long running attempt to influence God.

Circumcision the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant has meaning for us today as it points is to the Gospel.

Why Circumcision?

The Abrahamic Covenant

God's promise in Genesis 3, to overturn the curse of the fall and defeat Satan, was gloriously fulfilled in Christ in the New Testament. There were four times in the old Testament when God drew especially close to his people to not only re-affirm this overarching promise but also to reveal more fully different aspects of his promise. (Think of Noah, Abraham, Moses and David). Rev Paul Gibson explored some of the important aspects of the Abrahamic Covenant and how it works out in the lives of believers even today, before the congregation rejoiced in celebrating the sign and the seal of the covenant being given at the dual baptism of Skye and Eilah this morning.

Just as God's revelation to all His people across the ages was revealed in progressive stages, by means of numerous covenants, even God's one covenant with Abraham was revealed in stages across the book of Genesis. In Genesis 17, God reveals that the sign of His covenant with Abraham will be circumcision. But what does circumcision truly signify, and what does it not signify? Circumcision is an outward physical sign, but it does not guarantee faithfulness. It was always meant as a shadow of the inward reality of regeneration, i.e. circumcision of the heart. The tension this created was a mixed covenant community: a covenant community that, by design, contained some members who were faithful and some who were unfaithful. Unfortunately, there are many who have taken this tension and applied it directly to the New Covenant community, a.k.a. the church, insisting that the New Covenant community is also supposed to be mixed. And thus, they baptize their infants, just as the descendants of Abraham circumcised their infants. But this is not what the Scriptures teach. The New Covenant Community is not defined by the physical sign, but instead by the inward reality.

What is the purpose of the Mosaic Covenant? Is it eternal law for all people of all time or was it a specific covenant to Israel of the past?

How does the greater fulfillment impact the initial fulfilment in the Abrahamic Covenant?

In Acts 7:1-53 Stephen gives a defense of the accusations of blasphemy concerning Moses, the Law, and the Temple. When asked if he was rejecting these beliefs of the Jewish religion, Stephen gives a powerful exposition. Stephen delivers a beautiful sermon in the Old Testament and how it connects with the New Testament. It is critical for Christians to understand the role of the Old Testament in light of the New Testament. We cannot have one and reject the other. We must understand the theology of the Old and how this points to the culmination of the Messiah in the New.

How do we see the fulfilment of the Abrahamic covenant?

How are we to see the Covenant God mad with Abraham? What is the Shadow and what is the Substance? What were the near fulfilments and what are the far fulfilments?
