Poverty of Spirit

82

Introduction

I: THE BEATITUDES IN GENERAL

We could define this blessedness “simply as fellowship with God, the experience of His covenant promise: ‘I will be your God and you will be my people.’ It means having a right relationship to God, and enjoying Him as we should.” Sinclair Ferguson

OT Beatitudes – Psalms 1 & 32

II: POVERTY OF SPIRIT MISUNDERSTOOD

Not material poverty

Not weakness or cowardice

Not a sense of worthlessness as a human being

III: POVERTY OF SPIRIT DEFINED

Jesus is talking about your spirit (1 Cor. 2:11)

It is how we view ourselves in relation to God.

IV: POVERTY OF SPIRIT REALIZED

We can’t make ourselves poor in spirit; it be revealed to us by God.

It must be cultivated

It results in great worth and blessing
