The Royal Law
Series Faith and Love
92
Showing favoritism doesn’t seem evil. It is rationalized by claiming “I’m just showing love.” James’ response is, “If that’s really what you’re doing, that’s great. But if it’s real love, there won’t be any favoritism.” The royal law is to love others as you love yourself (NOT a command to love self – we already love ourselves). This command is important (royal law), the standard is the highest there is (self-love), and the object is neighbor (anyone near you). If you fail, you will be judged without mercy (unless you are a believer, in which case you will repent).
