Heb # 20 Abraham, Melchizedek, Christ, tithing and the Law

  1. Many proponents of tithing argue that tithing is still binding on the conscience of the believer under the New Testament because they say, "tithing predates the Law" and so they use Hebrews 7, which is the exposition of the encounter of Abraham with Melchizedek to prove it.

  2. Is that even true? Is that what the text is even suggesting? The text has nothing to do with giving under the New Covenant. It is a text that is teaching the relation of Christ to all things-His superiority over the Law through the encounter of Abraham with Melchizedek.

  3. Just expounding this text brought out a lot of wonderful gospel nuggets. You have to hear it.

  4. We also explored that Melchizedek IS NOT a type of Christ. His profile is too lofty or exalted to just be a type. There is no type of Christ who lives forever and has a perpetual Priesthood.

  5. We taught about tithing under the Law and giving under the New Covenant just to explore the differences-which are very clear. That the New Testament guide to giving is from a cheerful heart-not from compulsion because the pattern is God cheerfully giving His Son, the Son cheerfully giving Himself and the Father and the Son cheerfully giving the Holy Spirit.

  6. If Christ is superior to the Law-which is the point-then the Law can not accomplish salvation for the sinner. The Law cannot sanctify or justify because it is INFERIOR to CHRIST.

  7. But if Christ is superior-as He is-then salvation is also a sure thing-it is guaranteed by the dignity of His person and the excellency and perfection of His work. Therefore salvation cannot be lost. A salvation that can be lost was accomplished by a false Christ who cannot be found in the mind and
