The Difficulty in Dealing with Secret Sin

227

It is worth highlighting the Psalmist's spiritual courage. Here is a man determined to explore the innermost recesses of his own heart. Is this not the highest type of courage possible?

Did any of the great courageous generals of a past day, who won renown on many a battlefield and whose names are itched in history, ever do this?

David was a man of courage. When he slew a lion in the way, when he successfully encountered a bear, when he went out to meet the giant Goliath, he gave undoubted proofs of courage; but never did he display such signal courage as when he determined to have the Lord to look into his own heart. It takes more courage to engage in this spiritual pursuit than to fight with wild beasts.

May God give us this spiritual courage and fortitude to explore our own. A person who does not know their hearts, knows very little. We need to know ourselves. We need to have our own hearts searched. We need the Lord to lead that search.

This morning I want us to consider the difficulty of discerning our hearts.
