This story occurred 15 years prior but published here to remind the Jews of why God was judging them. The Rechabites were commended for their loyal obedience to their ancestor, Jonadab. The Jews, however, failed to honor their God. The side issue here is the faithfulness to mindless tradition, while ignoring the Word of God through the instruction and preaching.
