The Fifth Sign – Walking on the Water

39

We come now to the fifth of the seven signs that the apostle John recorded in his gospel account of our Lord's life and ministry. This one was is the record of Jesus walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee, in the midst of a rather severe storm. This is the same event that Matthew recorded in which Peter walked on the water. Interestingly, John omits that episode entirely. Now, in the sermon today I will highlight the setting of the miracle, the performing of the miracle itself, and then the significance of it. This was an astounding event that was witnessed by the disciples of Jesus only, and according to Matthew, it served to convince them that Jesus is indeed the Son of God. I will seek to draw out particular application, including the episode with Peter, for there we see the nature of saving faith. Although Peter is often criticized as being a failure at this point, I shall demonstrate that his faith is to be emulated by both unbelievers and believers. Once again it is my prayer that God will bless His word preached as we continue our study of these fascinating miracles of Jesus.
