David's Reign Extends Over All Israel

Representatives of the eleven tribes of Israel come to David and give three reasons for asking him to be their king. One, they are blood relatives; two, he has been their military leader; and three, it is common knowledge that David has been anointed to be king over Israel.

His first activity is to move the center of his rule from Hebron to Jerusalem. He conquers the Jebusites, takes the stronghold of Zion and establishes wat will be known as 'the city of David.'

In what seems like a glaring inconsistency, David recognizes it is the Lord working through him that is increasing his stature before the people all the while he is acquiring many wives in violation of God's word. Surprisingly, there is no record of rebuke or discipline of David for using his position to multiply his personal pleasures.

With Jerusalem becoming the capital city of the nation David brings the Ark of the Covenant to the city. God has given specific instructions for moving the ark. Trouble comes when these are ignored, even for good intentions.

1. God always does what He says He will.
2. Success is a result of the work of the Lord.
3. Arrival at God's destination for us doesn't mean we can relax.
4. First response should always be to seek the Lord then do His will.
5. Good intentions are no substitute for obedience.
6. The holiness of God is dangerous.
