God's Spirit and Word - Working Together

Idea: God has given us His word and Spirit together for the purpose of converting sinners and confirming our faith. Therefore we must look to the word and the Spirit when we are tempted by adversity.

1. Conjunction - God promises to assist His church by giving His Spirit and His word.
   a. Confirmed by Christ
   b. Confirmed by Pentecost
   c. Confirmed experientially

2. Two applications
   a. God uses the preaching of the word in a special way to convict and convince sinners and to cause believers to grow in grace.
   b. The Word and Spirit are and must be joined together. If they are not then particular errors and tendencies begin to grow.
   1) Error of approaching the Word without the Holy Spirit
   2) Error of emphasizing the Holy Spirit to the exclusion of the Word
