#8 What's In Your Tent?

There is no lack of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. There is no lack of sufficient cause in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. Hell is not full. We can have no security in ourselves. There is laid in the very nature of carnal men a foundation for the torments of hell. Those corrupt principles are the seeds of hell fire. Isaiah 57:20 compares the souls of the wicked to the troubled sea. For the present, God restrains their wickedness by His mighty power. Sin is the ruin and misery of the soul. It is destructive in nature and if God should leave it without restraint, nothing else would be needed to make the soul perfectly miserable. The corruption of the heart of man is excessive and boundless in its fury. This is a side of God we don't see often today. It's a side that we don't like to think about. Some people say this side of God doesn't exist because "God is love." This passage puts a spotlight on the character trait of God's called wrath. God doesn't overlook sin. God could at any moment call us to account. What is sin a big deal? God has shown himself to be good to his people! But God has also shown himself to punish his people for their sin. When David was enabled to see his sin, this is how he repented. Psalm 51:3-4, "For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I singed and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment." Sin is always a big deal because first and foremost it is against a Big and Holy God. Sin digs in its heels and refuses to die. Sin is a big deal because sin doesn't quit.
