Renewing the Modern Western Mind
45
This sermon commences a series on "What is really important?" The essence of this message is first of all discerning the state of the Western mind, especially in America. The internalized norms of the age are in the church too; even in relatively mature believers. "Internalized norms" is a David Wells phrase. There are no more "steel driving men" like the legendary John Henry, nor need there be, nor really can there be. That world is gone never to return, so are other culture shaping entities that used to shape the Western mind. This being the case, HOW IMPORTANT IS THE LORD'S DAY? Poor Western man! He does not know the Sabbath principle was made to rest, to invigorate and to regulate his needy spirit!
