Limited Atonement
Series 1 Timothy
1 Timothy 2:4 says that "God desires all men to be saved." This is often used as a proof text by Arminians to defend universal atonement. It is also used by many Calvinists to argue against hyper-Calvinists. Though I am no hyper-Calvinist and I clearly see the dangers of hyper-Calvinism, I do not believe that the word "all" should be interpreted as "all without exception." I believe the proper interpretation is "all without distinction" -- that is, all nations, every tribe and tongue. I do not believe that a universal desire on the part of God can hold up under the weight of biblical and experiential evidence to the contrary. I will deal with the obvious question: "How then should we evangelize?" What should we tell lost people if we cannot tell them that God desires their salvation?
