John 5:24 is often used as an invitation to sinners to hear and believe in Christ so that they might have eternal life. An examination of the verse will show that those who hear and believe already have eternal life. Their hearing and believing is possible because they have been born from above—resurrected from spiritual death to new life in Christ (v. 25). Verse 24 is actually a rebuke to the Jewish leaders who are persecuting and condemning Christ. What does it mean, then to hear and believe?
