LD 33 Repentance unto Life

18

What explains the change that happens when someone becomes a Christian? Paul here pictures the gospel entering a community and describes how it affected the people of Thessalonica. First came the message of Jesus - there is no conversion without the gospel. But it is more than words - the power of the Holy Spirit convinces people of its truth and significance and gives them a heart to respond. Paul saw evidence of that in the fact they coped with persecution with the joy of the Holy Spirit - as he had. The effect lasted, unlike the 'stony ground hearers' of Jesus' parable. They had been worshipping useless idols - that was part of their culture and identity - but they gave it all up when they turned to God. And we have idols, too. It was a change of mind, heart, and conduct as the gospel took hold of them. Their service was joyful, worthwhile and active. The Christian's longings are met by the promise of Christ - not only of his Spirit in their heart but also his coming in person. And that hope will not disappoint.
