I’ve studied a fair amount in legal history, and one of the basic principles of legal history is that when you read that so-and-so passed a law, that doesn’t mean that everyone followed the law. Rather, the reason why they passed the law was because it wasn’t happening!
In other words, all this emphasis on the importance of not mistreating sojourners – What does it mean?
It means that Israel had a bad habit of mistreating sojourners! It means that Israel had a problem with men seducing young women. It means that there were lots of property disputes. It means that people regularly spread fake news and sought to use their wealth to “influence” others without regard for truth and justice...
Yeah, aren’t you glad that human beings have changed so much in the last 3,000 years?!
