No Vain Use of God's Holy Name
Series Heidelberg Catechism
100
Third Commandment
As man is by nature, he cannot know God. Yet, in grace, God has revealed his name to us. He is the God of covenant, or salvation, who comes near to his people in Christ. What a God! What a name!
God's name is holy. God has sanctified many things. To take God's name in vain is to take those holy things and make them base. The proper names of God, his attributes, his revelation in creation and Christ, and all else that is holy, are to be held in reverence and treated with respect.
This is not a sin taken lightly by God. It is the sin which portrays the spirit of Antichrist. God will not hold him guiltless that violates His holy name.
