The Year of Release

God prescribed a year of release (Shemetah) for all debts (of fellow Jews) every seven years. It is our source of the sabbatical. All debts were forgiven but they were still to be generous to those in need. Also all Jewish bondservants were released in the seventh year of service. This is another picture of how Jesus Christ releases us from our bondage to sin.
