What An Understatement!
Series Galatians
43
An understatement is an intentionally restrained comment made for greater effect. The disparity between the understatement and the expected statement serves to arrest the attention. Paul's concluding words about the fruit of the Spirit are, "against such things there is no law." This is interpreted as an intentional and effective understatement which accentuates the law keeping bound up in these graces, a law keeping which exceeds anything the legalist or libertine could ever accomplish.
