Divorce According to Moses
Series The Sermon on the Mount
375
The Pharisees of Jesus' day twisted Moses' laws into a provision for no-fault divorce. But Moses' actual meaning was far different. Like Jesus, Moses taught that divorce is a remedy for sin, and that divorce is an acceptable remedy for adultery (Deut. 24:1) or for failure to provide food, clothing, or marital rights in conjuction with a polygamous match (Ex. 21:10-11). This OT background is vital for understanding the NT teaching, and corrects misreadings of the NT which claim that remarriage is not permissible after valid divorce. Taking the Biblical witness as a whole, the contrary is clearly the case: remarriage after a divorce made on Biblical grounds is completely permissible.
